A day in Cagliari – sun, sea and history in Sardinia’s capital city

Early in the morning: a stroll through the old town

The day begins with a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets of Cagliari’s old town. The pastel-coloured houses glow in the morning sun as we fall in love with the charming atmosphere of the city. The authentic cafés open their doors and the Italian dolce vita is already palpable.

Morning: The Bastione Saint Remy and panoramic view

Our first stop takes us to the Bastione Saint Remy, an imposing structure that offers a breathtaking view of Cagliari. From here, we overlook the city, the harbour and the deep blue Mediterranean. The contrast between the historic architecture and the sparkling water lends the moment an irresistible magic.

Lunch: Culinary delights in Marina

For lunch, we dive into the lively Marina neighbourhood. The fish restaurants along the harbour promise fresh seafood and Sardinian specialities. Over a glass of local Vermentino, we let ourselves be seduced by the flavours of Mediterranean cuisine and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere by the water.

Afternoon: Poetto beach and sunbathing

The afternoon belongs to the beach! Poetto beach, with its golden sand and turquoise waters, is just a short drive from the city centre. We spread out our towels, soak up the warm sun and listen to the gentle sound of the waves. The perfect place to unwind.

In the afternoon: cultural tour of the Archaeological Museum

To gain an insight into the fascinating history of Sardinia, we visit the Archaeological Museum of Cagliari. Here we encounter evidence of the prehistoric Nuragic culture and discover ancient treasures that reflect the island’s rich past.

In the evening: sunset at the Belvedere di Monte Urpinu

As evening approaches, we make our way to the Belvedere di Monte Urpinu, a vantage point that affords us another fascinating view of the city and the sea. The sunset bathes Cagliari in warm colours and the skyline is illuminated by the city lights.

In the evening: dinner under the stars in Castello

We return to the historic Castello neighbourhood for dinner. The narrow streets are now illuminated by atmospheric lanterns. We choose a cosy restaurant, sample local delicacies such as malloreddus and succulent lamb dishes and round off the day with a good Sardinian wine under the stars.

Conclusion: A day full of contrasts and beauty

Cagliari delighted us with its unique blend of history, culinary delights and relaxed beach life. This one-day trip was an ode to the diversity of Sardinia and left us with unforgettable impressions of a Mediterranean pearl.
